Yucatan fun facts

Yucatan is one of the two Mexican peninsulas, the other being Baja California. It is often referred to as "sureste" meaning south east although due to Mexico's weird orientation is not actually positioned too south.

  • The name "Yucatán" likely derives from a Mayan phrase, with the most common interpretation being "I don't understand".
  • The Yucatan Peninsula, the only one facing north, separated from Africa millions of years ago.
  • The peninsula comprises parts of Belize and Guatemala, as well as three separate Mexican states: Yucatán, Quintana Roo and Campeche.
  • Is a northeastern projection of Central America, lying between the Gulf of Mexico to the west and north and the Caribbean Sea to the east.
  • The primary water source in the Yucatan Peninsula is groundwater, specifically through a vast network of underground rivers and cenotes (sinkholes) formed by the porous limestone bedrock.
  • The primary indigenous language is Yucatec Maya, spoken by a large portion of the population, particularly in rural areas.
