Moving around the country

Basically there are three options to travel within the republic:

  • Airplane which most of the time is the most economic way. At least every state capital and most significant towns have an airport with daily connections to at least Mexico City.
    • Aeromexico operates through Mexico City to many other cities but doesn't have connections between other cities. Also the cost is kind of high.
    • There are two low-cost airlines Volaris and Viva Aerobus which do cover the above case and at a reasonable price.
    • Regional airlines also exist for within state flights t connect capitals with smaller airports.
  • Autobus that would rather want avoid unless you are able to sleep while travelling. The distances and travel hours are long and the cost many times is much higher than the plane.
  • Drive gives you much more flexibility it it's maybe the best option if you are not alone and you don't mind the state of the highways nor the cost of the tolls. Will elaborate on this option at another time.
  • Lastly there is a ferry option between Baja California peninsula and mainland, specifivally the state of Sinaloa. There are actually two routes: Mazatlan to La Paz and Topolobambo La Paz.
You've noticed something missing here? You are right! Unfortunately there are NO passenger train routes with the only exception the ridiculously overcharged Chepe that passes through the Copper Canyon from Chihuahua to Los Mochis. But yes if you can afford it worth the expense to get to know this part of the country.
