Pyramids

Mexico is one of the very few countries that you encounter an archeological site every couple of hundreds of kilometers. Normally pyramids are what mostly call once attention.

They are located mostly on the center and south of the country. On the center the ones closest to CDMX and the most visited on the area is Teotihuacan and several on the surrounding states of Puebla, Tlaxcala, Hidalgo, Michoacán. On Puebla's Cholula you can get in an visit the inside. On Hidalgo's Tula you'll find ruins of the Toltecs civilization.

Heading towards the gulf El Tajin in Veracruz state is quiet different, resembles more of those in Asia, and going south La Venta in Tabasco shows something about the mysterious Olmecs.

There are several all over Oaxaca state with Monte Alban and Mitla the most visited. Then we enter the Mayan world on states of Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo, most of them well hidden into the jungle and hundreds yet to be discovered. My favorites Palenque and Yaxchilán in Chiapas, Calakmul in Campeche, can't honestly pick a favorite in Yucatan but I do suggest the PUUC route to visit a few of them, finally Tulum in Quintana Roo is the only one right at the beach!

On some of them you can climb, on others not anymore. For a complete list here.
